This is a book to be read in one happy inhalation, preferably with hot tea in a porcelain cup and no interruptions whatsoever! Many mystery novels are page turners and this one is certainly one such, but it's texture and pace give it a delightfully different feel..hence the cup of tea. At the center is Kitty Weeks, a young woman so immediately captivating and enterprising, one is drawn into her adventures as easily and insistently as your cat jumps and settles on your lap! The real pleasure of the book lies, I believe, in the vivid and evocative portrayal of the period and the city in which this lively mystery takes place. With the skill of a historian and a scholar of that bygone, but well loved era, the author describes Kitty's New York with authenticity and rich detail. She makes us see Kitty walking down the avenues, entering mansions with marbled halls, having lunch in restaurants, risking the censure of society. The mystery weaves in and out of these glamorous locales, we meet real people of historical importance, we get glimpses of real scandals and intrigues which shook that world and made front page news! As the story reaches its satisfying and dramatic conclusion, we can see that Kitty has really only just begun to be the kind of reporter and sleuth she hopes to be. The author hints of more Kitty Weeks mysteries, so one can look forward to immersing oneself again into that glittering and intriguing world.

A Front Page Affair is written with all the attention to detail that historical fiction needs. It is set beautifully in New York City at a point in history that is usually overlooked in American history: the weeks before we joined in World War I. But the lush background isn't even the best part of the book! You know how when you're reading an E.L. Doctorow book how you can feel the author's voice throughout the whole story? I personally find that distracting. I want to be carried away by the story and the character's voices. Ms. Vatsal immersed herself so deeply in the story that we don't notice her, instead we are carried away by the heroine and her development and the depth of the supporting characters (both real and fictional).I highly recommend A Front Page Affair to anyone who enjoys Agatha Christie, Bronte or Austen books. I have a feeling the next books in the series will have fun, complicated romance in them too!

Capability "Kitty" Weeks would love nothing more than to report on the news of the day, but she's stuck writing about fashion and society gossip over on the Ladies' Page—until a man is murdered at a high society picnic on her beat. As she becomes involved in front page reporting, her life becomes more in danger.I enjoy historical fiction and for a change this book was not about World War 2. The author provided a well-researched book about a time period that I am not entirely familiar with. But I found myself quite absorbed in the story and turning the pages quickly to see what would happen next. The book carefully portrayed what it must have been like for a woman to operate in what was thought of as a man’s world at that time in history. The mystery, while not graphic, was riveting enough to hold the readers interest. It was also one that you would not say to yourself after reading the second chapter of the book, “I know who did it.” I found myself doing a lot of guessing as to why some events were happening but then all was revealed at the end. I am excited about reading the next book in the series.I received this book in exchange for an honest review. The comments are my own.

I just finished a Front Page Affair and loved it! Kitty Weeks is a fabulous female lead-straining against the social norms of what women were expected to say and do but at the same time, being genuine and intelligent and ultimately, being recognized for it. This book is as much about the start of the women's movement from a very personal perspective as it is about the actual mystery! I thoroughly enjoyed every page as all of the historical themes were extremely well researched while being woven into the mystery. Radha Vatsal did a wonderful job of interlacing the historical reality with fiction! I can't wait for the next installment in Kitty Weeks' adventures as a journalist!

The reason for the title of my review is the quickness with which I discard a book if I loose interest or become irritated with the characters. I wanted to like this book, there were several reasons to enjoy it, but over all there were a few too many weak points to give it a four star. The protagonist was a likable young woman with a desire to succeed as a reporter--a very common plot theme today--and she did have a good work ethic. The problem was that, given her understanding of her what her job entailed, the several stupid things she chose to do were very irritating(no spoiler here) although they were necessary to drive the plot. I was also disappointed in the unbelievable climax of the mystery. In addition, her father, while an admirable parent and one of the more enjoyable characters, did not feel true to the time period. Some of her interactions with the less likable characters in the story did feel real. In spite of those quibbles, I will be reading other books by this author and recommend giving this series a try. I think it will get better.

I enjoy mysteries with historical settings and this book filled the bill, placed as it was in WWI era New York City. Kitty Weeks, intrepid would-be girl (she is only in her late teens) reporter, is an appealing protagonist, and the mystery plot features several clever twists and turns. I did notice one minor anachronism. Photographers at that time still used flash powder, not flash bulbs. I also felt the portrayal of women journalists as struggling for recognition was overstated. Women began working as journalists in the 1800s, and their work was not all relegated solely to the "women's pages" Nonetheless, this was an enjoyable read, and I'll look forward to following the further adventures of Kitty Weeks..
