The Talisman- Molly’ Story by Eliza J. Scott is a 2019 publication.A charming story about life, love lost and found, second chances and new beginnings-Molly, Pip, and their three children move into a Georgian Farmhouse with plans to expand into the ‘glamping’ business. The move also brings her closer to her parents after her father receives a life altering medical diagnosis. There are the usual family dilemmas, dramas, comedies and challenges of marriage, friendships, and small- town life to contend with, but all in all Molly is contented enough, until her world is spun upside down by an unforeseeable tragedy. As Molly struggles to put her life back together, karma comes calling, bringing with it a second chance at happiness for Molly and her family. This is a delightful story filled with quirky characters and situations, depicting the understandable challenges of everyday life. While the characters are somewhat exaggerated for effect, the realities of raising children, realizing a dream, coping with illness and tragedy, enjoying friends and community, and coping with a few unpleasant residents, sounds a lot like real life. Some of you will laugh, but it just goes to show that you don’t have to read heavy literature to learn something new. I had no idea what ‘glamping’ was. I had to Google it. Now I know why I’d never heard of it. Camping is not my thing- but if I were to consider it- glamping is the only way I’d want to go. So, you learn something new every day.The story runs just a little too long and might benefit from a few cuts here or there for the sake of momentum. Molly’s temperament is a little over the top, bordering on ‘anger management’ territory, which couldn’t be healthy. But, overall, I enjoyed reading about Molly’s life and her community, which is a little different, but often fun and humorous. Molly may have a hot temper, but she is a good person, and it was nice to see her rewarded for that, in the most unexpected ways. Molly’s love story is sweet and maybe a little magical too.
*I received a free copy of this book with thanks to the author and Rachel Gilbey at Rachel’s Random Resources blog tours. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*Readers who are familiar with Eliza J. Scott’s previous book, The Letter: Kitty’s Story will recognise the settings and characters here, but there is no need to have read one to enjoy the other, as both stories follow a different main character on their road happiness and romance.I would describe the tone of this series as ‘cosy romance’, set as it is in a close-knit village community with an extended-family feel to all (well, most) of the neighbours. The ‘main crowd’ consists of Molly and her husband Pip, her cousins Kitty and Jimby, and Vi and Ollie, best friends to Kitty and Jimby respectively. Along with this adorable group of close friends are a surrounding cast of cute kids, caring villager acquaintances and eccentric elders. Obviously not everyone can be wonderful, and there is a particular family who I would certainly love to eventually get their comeuppance, but apart from them I would happily move to Lytell Stangdale!Still, whilst there is sweet romance and strong friendship there must also be trouble and conflict to keep the story moving. In the previous book this external conflict came from Kitty’s deeply unhappy marriage to the odious bully Dan. In contrast, Molly and Pip have a strong marriage but are beset by worries about their teenage boys, the farm they have taken responsibility for and their new baby (never easy!). Then things go really wrong…What I love most in these books is how the characters all pull together in a crisis and work through things as a team. It is the ultimate in wish fulfilment to feel the strength and warmth of love in the friendships and romances the author brings to life within these pages, and I would definitely read more from the residents of Lytell Stangdale (maybe it’s Vi’s turn next?).Fans of gentle romance with a strong theme of family and friendship will really enjoy this series, and I’m sure I won’t be the only one who is waiting impatiently to see the back of the awful Aiofe!‘You’re up to something, aren’t you?’ She narrowed her eyes at him. ‘I can tell. That’s what all this wining and dining’s about. Come on, you might as well spill the beans cos I’m going to find out sooner or later.’ She pursed her lips as she swirled the wine around her glass.‘I don’t know what you mean! Can’t a bloke take his wife out for a slap-up meal on their anniversary without being accused of being up to summat? You’ve got a suspicious mind, you have, Molly Pennock.’ He wagged a finger at her.She wagged one back at him. ‘That, Pip Pennock, is because I know you too well. This is the man who buys his wife a hoover as a gift. Or, worse, a couple of bloody pigs for Valentine’s day. This is not the man who arranges romantic evenings and a day’s clothes shopping.’‘Don’t try telling me you don’t think the world of them pigs.’ Pip folded his arms across his chest and stretched his legs out onto the coffee table in front of him.– Eliza J.
