If you are into magic, wizardry, fantasy and badass spellmongers this is the book for you.It wasn't a long time ago when I saw the book in my recommended list of books, being an avid fantasy fanboy. Asalways, I would treat any serious with scepticism eager to see whether the book would grow on me, as being a veteran on fantasy elements having read LOTR Wheel o Time and various other titles in my spare time. But I did not expect the book to be this good.I will not speak about the fantastic plot and the world building I done in this book nor will I speak about the intricate system of magic introduced to us nor bout the insanely badass characters in this book.If you are ready to spend your money on new title or a little freebie to take up your time you must buy this book. 100% guarantee you will not regret it
The story is relatively fun and it's an enjoyable read but the book has some issues. First there are a very large number of spelling errors. This isn't usually a problem for me as my brain skips right over them but this book has so many it tripped me up on occasion. My second issue is the author's habit of repeating themself several times in the book as if the reader is an imbecile and can't remember anything. The last issue I had was that despite the author's attempt to make the main characters situation seem dire, it never really came across that way. The main character behaves in a frivolous manner throughout the book despite the things he's going through and everything works out just fine and dandy. The main character is meant to be likable but he comes off as pompous and idiotic. Overall it was still enjoyable to read and passed the time bit it has some major issues.
I love Spellmonger. Best book I have read since Name of the Wind. I love the exposition as much as the plot. I love that it doesn't read like a screenplay. I learn stuff all the time in this book. Thx for the research and the great character development. And I get to read ten more! I am only on to the second book. Also, I had no idea these books were published through Amazon. I think that is awesome. I love the feel of the exposition and how I am learning about the world. It is like it is growing up around me. There seems to be this assumption with publishers today that readers cannot handle sections of data about the world as if we are all children and need to have our plot Oreos fed to us at exactly the right moment without any expectation that we can actually read about something other than, he said, she said and what next, to move it along.I see the influence of all the great fantasy writes of the 80's I grew up on and appreciate it. Anyway Terry, way to go! I love these books and that you have 11 of them for me to read and more to come. Also, I feel like I am watching the main character grow up and become a man and take on real responsibility. I have had to do that in my own life and lead an organization, and the issues that come up in this book are real and relevant. You can actually learn something while being entertained.I love how the magic system goes into detail about how it all works. It feels like to me that if magic were real, that it would perhaps work this way. There is a lot of what I call inner-world shamanic magic that goes on here that is really based on the foundations of actual shamanic magic systems in our world. The author has done his homework and not just made stuff up that makes no sense at all.Lastly, I am impressed that Terry has folks working for him that can play the editorial role and such. I personally am not bothered by a few spelling errors and grammar issues. But I am not part of the grammar and spelling police. I appreciate clarity as much as the next person, but I think story matters more and getting the books written and out there. There is always time to hire someone to find and fix minor stuff later. Getting bogged down by the final editing stags can kill the rest of the creative process. Create, shape, and polish are how I see the three stages of that process. We all have our strengths and for a fantasy author, the first two stages are most important. For a copy editor, the last one is.Overall the best fantasy series I have read in years! As a fellow novelist and poet, I love this work. It has also inspired me to take a look at the first two books in a fantasy series I wrote ten years ago that went into the drawer after a couple rejections. Time to get those kids some jackets and get them on Amazon! Long live Kindle Direct Publishing and may it bring many more great books into print!
For the series overall, I have read some of the reviews, and some of the issues are there. I think the biggest issue for me, is that it seems rushed, as there are errors throughout....not constant mind you, but missing words, miss spellings, wrong character/place, etc. Unfortunate, but as long as one does not make it upset them, it's easy to move on.The writing style is interesting. First person...mostly, though written as if this was after the wars and the main character had time to reflect and write about what happened.....though that said, it does not always feel that way.Battle details (I'm not an expert...more a neophyte at best) seem to be pretty well thought out and has knowledge on the subject. Bloody, but most of the time not getting too gory. What is interesting is that as the main character takes on higher rolls of command through the series, the portrayal of their view point, and the complexities at those command levels. i.e. first attack, it was all about fending of the next enemy that popped up, while a book or two later it is how to manage the units, based on their abilities, terrain, etc. And supplies, rest, fatigue, etc.Era seems to be well managed and thought out. One review mentioned that abuse of a woman was not dealt with to their acceptance, given this type of era, that was common place...some people were better than others as for treatment of others, but still. I think the main character is written to care and do what he can and when, but understanding that our modern beliefs can't take place in that time. Peasants, slaves, animals, etc, were all treated poorly, or at different levels based on place in society. I think the only think not terribly realistic about the main character is his beliefs in the society/era he was raised in....now, I think the author has done a good job at explain where that comes from to help with suspending ones disbelief for the most part. But, the main character seems a little to altruistic with others.Character development: at times it seems a little shallow, but overall after reading 4 of the books at this writing, seems to work quite well - especially after delving into two other characters point of view in Knights Mage. Reasonable amounts of variability, complexity, and development.Polish and flow. As mentioned, there area few grammatical issues here and there. There also seems to be data dumps of info. Needed, but maybe some thought on placement or a way to divulge the info would be better...but really not that bad either. The story overall flows well, and keeps me wanting more.overall, I love the series, and have a hard time putting it down. There are some slow spots at times, but most books have that. I really recommend it, for those that can overlook the flaws.
