Clyde Robert Bulla is the author of over fifty books for children including The Secret Valley and The Story of Valentine’s Day. He has been writing since 1946 when he published his first book, The Donkey Cart. Great story for young readers and also great for first chapter books for parents to read. My husband reads a chapter night to our 5 and 3 year old. This is the first chapter book they've listened to. They really enjoy it. The story is simple to read and with enough details to keep them interested without being overwhelming.
What a well written book! I read it out loud to my 6 and 4 year old children. They were on the edge of their seats! They were so inspired when I finished reading the book that they begged me to make them cardboard swords so they could pretend to be knights. Highly recommend!
I first read this story in elementary school about the time i was just starting to develop a love of reading as a form of entertainment. It likely also explains my love of fantasy tales in particular if i were to think about it like...at all.I love this story and recommend it to all i guess is what I'm saying. Granted, it is a children's story. But in fairness, i was a child when i first read it.It was in an elementary school reading textbook, so whenever i thought about it over the years i could never find it as a book nor even finding an old copy of the aforementioned textbook.So, i am thrilled to finally find it and to have the opportunity to recommend it to others.
For a grandson who loves to play with his castle and knight figures, this book is a natural addition to that world and an introduction into another time and place. My grandsons are 8 and 5 and I want them to know about the whole world and all those times past when battles were fought and principles lived up to. They will realize that history repeats itself and if they learn from that, then perhaps they can make their future world a better place to be.
I read this to my 6 year old daughter in one sitting - she wouldn't let me stop! Great adventure for a kid who loves knights and castles. The language is simple enough that my first grader could have read it herself. The story is exciting but not too scary.
Part of my 2nd grader's homework is to read for 30 minutes each night. I am always on the lookout for books he will enjoy reading, so I don't have to MAKE him do it. There was no force involved with this one. He finished the whole book in one sitting and couldn't wait to tell me about it. Apparently there were sword fights and villains and knights and King Arthur, and a couple of heroes as well. What more could you ask for? Pretty exciting for an easy to read book.
My 9 year old has to be poked, prodded and bribed to read "20 minutes" per day. She couldn't put this book down, and willingly finished it.
Another hit with my 9 year old! He loves Clyde Robert bulla stories.
