Written in seven parts, the story opens with the voice of Jonah, 5, describing what he is feeling and seeing as his family mourns his recent death. His daddy told him he would go to heaven but Jonah informs the reader that he's not there. He hasn't "seen God yet, or any angels". Instead he feels like he's floating although he doesn't have a body. Jonah thinks he's supposed to do something but has no clue what.As the book proceeds meet Eden, Jonah's 10 year old sister, Samuel his father, Rachel his mother, his Auntie Ruth and Shadow, the family dog. Each chapter features the above in order several times relating their grief and current life in first person. Eden is having to face her classmates as she goes back to school. Samuel, having always been the strong one, now feels helpless, resentful towards Ruth, is not giving Eden the attention and love she deserves and drinking a little too much. He has no clue how to handle Rachel. Rachel has gone to pieces, no longer caring about anything around her and relying heavily on medication. Ruth is still suffering after her divorce eighteen months ago but glad to have something to do, feeling like she is the one keeping the family together. Shadow obviously sees things from a dog's perspective. He knows his family is sad but that causes him to suffer too when they forget to feed him and he no longer gets the attention that he once did. Grief is told and shared from all angles as this story progresses. Each member blames them-self for Jonah's death. An almost devastating consequence occurs when Rachel realizes that Jonah is not in heaven and thus 'needs' her help to get him there! This also brings in a new character: Maddie, a therapist/counselor. Maddie owns a very successful practice and it is only through a friend's pleading that she takes on this family's "case". Can she help them work through their grief and be a family again?Filled with tragedy the reader is sometimes rewarded with some humorous moments. Some of Jonah's memories and enthusiasm will have you smiling. Maddie has discovered that the only way to relax after her stressful days without affecting her waistline is with mild medical marijuana. We do not learn how Jonah died until Chapter 31 and it is even longer before we learn exactly what happened BUT this does not make the read a frustrating one. The story grips you and keeps you reading. How's the language? For those of you who like to be forewarned the F-bomb is present almost 30 times. There is some other mild language also. Although there are no detailed sex scenes, Samuel is very much a man who admits that one part of him sometimes rules his brain thus the language/descriptions can be a little coarse occasionally. Tempted by an affair, will he succumb or realize that his marriage and family is worth more than that? This was an EXCELLENT, well researched, gripping read. Although fictional the experiences and feelings of each character come over as very real. Quite ingenious how the author wraps the story up. Not the kind of book I would usually read but I downloaded it as my Kindle First choice for November 2017. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz
I was reluctant at first to read this book; I know I'm not good with loss of children as part of a narrative. But something made me dive in and I'm glad I did. The story was intriguing and the characters became a family that you cared about. The actual circumstances of losing the child were tenderly told. It was real....and really good!
I purchased this book to see how the author managed to pull off writing in the first person simultaneously for 5 different characters, 6, if you count a dog. The answer is, she didn't, but it was a nice try. The dog was just silly. Of the 2 children, one of them a ghost or something, were lame, one dimensional attempts. The 3 adults were closer, but the characters were transparent and even somewhat stereotypical. Rachel, the mother is obviously the one that the author identifies with. She is depressed and drugged from grief, and is content to stay there. The 5 year old boy must be a saint, because he never does anything remotely wrong. Cheerful to a fault. Cloy is a word that comes to mind. But he can carry on a sentence to a amazing length of useless words. Guinness Records should look into that. This book is depressing, it should come with a warning that if you suffer from depression, reading it could possibly lead a reader to very dark places. In the first third of the book, the characters simply rebuke any attempts at sympathy from others, wallow in self pity like it is a cloak, and generally hate each other and everyone around them. They are a pitiful lot. And nothing happens. At all. They wander through their days, prodding each other that their self pity is the severest. Page after page of boredom. Rachel wakes up, she pees, she deflates. On and on from one character to the next. The only reason why I did not quit reading at this point is because I figure something is bound to happen soon. But it doesn't.The second third of the book is sort of a flashback at why they are in such a state. In that part of their lives at least they interact with each other, but nothing happens. The sister, Ruth, can cook, and we go on and on about that. And she hates men. We go on and on about that. Even with the husband's transgressions, nothing happens. But the reader is shown that something terrible will eventually happen. I remind myself of a spectator at a auto race, waiting patiently for a crash. By now, I am amazed that I haven't quit reading, but at this point I am determined to finish, no matter how boring. At last, at he very end, something happens. Something terrible, but not so terrible as to write a book about it. It happens to families all the time. By now, the the author has painted the characters into a corner of depression and despair, and the only way out is by a revelation of some sort, which magically kisses their hurt, and makes it all better.I should have stopped reading this book a long time before I did.
I was disappointed in the book despite the positive reviews. Each chapter is told in the voice of alternating family members including their dog which I thought was silly and made me roll my eyes. All of the family members voices- chapter by chapter -seemed to be the same -including the two children -and it was monotonous. Better luck next time
Wow. Just wow...Everyone says they want to read something new, something fresh. Something unexpected.Well, this is it.WHAT REMAINS TRUE by Janis Thomas is going to hit you and hard. You will finish the book, altered. You will experience the spectrum of emotions and by the end you may decide to read the novel one more time.
